Is it just me?

Well, I do wonder. Is it just me?

I’m getting a ton of attempted spam on this blog.

Now, I have a good filter system in place, so 99.999999 % are picked up as spam and I don’t have to worry about it, but is it a good sign to have a lot of spam? Does it mean the blog is sufficiently popular to be worth the trouble?

Or do spammers just think I’m stupid (I’m not, for the record).

How do other people cope?

    Hi Amin,
I’ve only ever had one spam comment on my blog, which appeared last week. I was kind of chuffed for a moment, cos in a strange way it showed that I was being targeted as a site of some note…

I didn’t have a spam filter before. but I set one up as soon as that happened.

I’m not sure which blog software you use, but if you’re on WordPress I know that there are loads of plugins to deal with spam.

  2. I think spammers just toss the stuff out wherever they can, although I’ve been fairly lucky. Of course, I have comment moderation enabled, which I think makes them avoid me.

Then again, I did get an outrageously anti-Semitic comment on a post I wrote about Anne Frank. That one still gets to me. What did he think I was going to do with it? (It had nothing to do with the post, it was just a random slur.)

  3. Amin, I see you have comment moderation enabled, but it doesn’t keep them away. Well, I was wrong there, I guess. Or perhaps Blogger’s settings are somehow easier for spammers to detect? I just wish they’d go away and leave the rest of the world alone.

LOL, Amin, that was funny. Rest assured, you aren’t alone in this. It is a pain, yes, but I guess there are some ways to get around it like comment moderation etc. I am not the best person to advise on this, though.

It’s interesting that I’m not alone with this problem.

I think it’s kind of funny, like PJ says, because it suggests that at least your site looks like it’s getting some traffic, but I have to say, after the initial buzz that you’ve been noticed it soon wears thin!

I’m posting a full entry on a related point about this.
