Short story challenge

Update 9th September. Story is now with Skint Writer. Serious apologies to everyone for the holdup on this. I’ve had a few issues to occupy me recently. I’m able to type now with some difficulty, but I’ll be trying to catch up this weekend.

Update 1st September. Story is currently with Saaleha and it’s looking quite interesting. I really can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Update 31st August. Just got back DBA’s contribution: next up is Ray (Wandering Author), Saaleha, then Skint Writer, Susan

Update: 5 spots taken, 2 left

I have a challenge for 6 writers, plus myself, to put together a short story in a similar way to the one we collaborated on recently over at Brandon’s blog.

If anyone wants to take part please just post a comment to that effect.

Here’s the challenge.

Total story length 1,500 words

Each poster to take any unused word from the following list and incorporate it in their post.

binary
rancid
reggae
microphone
irascible
vituperative
prosaic

Deadline for completion of all 7 parts is September 4th, which gives us plenty of time.

Order of contributors will be alphabetical by first name (probably means its me first!)

Any 2 contributors can collaborate with each other as a unit, respecting the overall word count.

There must be a twist in the tale at the end.

For anyone who agrees to join in I’ll send the appropriate section to you via email so please make sure I have your email address.

Any questions, just get in touch!

  1. Hi Amin,

The thing is 6 contributors is a small number now for all of us in the group to take part.
    I’d hate to be selfish.
And if I volunteered which I’d love to, I could just be depriving a few others of their place…maybe even those with a higher interest than me. Far more than 6 amongst those we know have expressed interest in this kind of thing. Perhaps others should have a chance now?
I don’t know. This thought stays my only concern.

Hi Susan. This blog isn’t that well known yet so I doubt there’ll be much of a queue to take part!

If I don’t get enough contributors would you take part then?

  3. Brandon says:

Amin, I’ll be selfish; I want to contribute no matter how many people there are in the queue. If all of those who read Susan’s blog know that you’re doing this, then you will have more than you imagined in the beginning.

Thanks for your comments on my posts at Flashing in the Gutters. I wondered if anyone else would think some of the things I put in there were funny.

  4. skint writer says:

Hi amin, I’d like to take the word rancid and turn it into something beautiful . . .

  5. amin says:

Brandon, thank you. I find your writing quite moreish, by the way. Spot number 1′s gone then. Pick a word. Any word.

Skint, I’ll take that as the second signup then.

And turning rancid into something beautiful sounds like a real challenge!

    4 spots left then.

  6. DBA Lehane says:

    Amin,

Count me in…and I’ll hog the “microphone”! ;)

  7. skint writer says:

Hi Amin – just a note to say that there is some script on you blog that is causing my Firefox to crash could be something to do with neoworx???

  8. amin says:

Hi Skint. It seems ok now. I think they sometimes have issues at neoworx. I’ll keep an eye on it and if it continues to be a problem I’ll have to pull it.

Darren, welcome to the challenge and thanks for joining in. I know your contribution will be something special. Microphone it is for you!

That’s 4 spots taken and 3 to go.

    Anyone else out there?

  9. the Wandering Author says:

Amin, count me in. Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner; I had trouble getting onto a lot of sites last night and today. I suspect it’s some Internet wide phenomenon. If we’re signing up for words now, I’ll take vituperative. If anybody else has a problem with that, reggae would be okay instead.

  10. amin says:

Excellent, Wandering! That’s 5 with 2 to go. Vituperative is yours. I’ll take whatever word is left over when everyone else has picked. That should make it more interesting.

I’ve had an interesting idea for another challenge in the future, but we’d better get this one out of the way first.

I’ve had some probs. myself with the ‘net today. Pain the proverbial.

  11. OK Amin, if you haven’t yet got 7 by the time you read this, coun me in. My email is abrahamsusan2003@yahoo.co.uk. Let me know the outcome if I’m in or out, ok

I’ll also gladly announce your short story challenge so people are aware you’re doing one and let me know when the story’s printed, so I can announce it on my blog and people could come over to read it.

  13. amin says:

Thanks, Susan. We still need 1 more writer now you’ve joined. Which word would you like?

  14. Saaleha says:

Could I be the last writer? I’ll take whatever word is left.

  15. Saaleha says:

if this comment comes up twice, forgive me. But what I wanted to say was, if that place is still vacant, could I be the last writer. I’ll take the leftovers

  16. amin says:

Saaleha, thanks. That’s great. We’ve now got a team together. I’ll just check with Susan which word she wants and then get back to you.

I’m looking forward to this collaboration. Should be interesting.

  17. Nicky says:

Dang! Missed the boat on this one! Ah well, will have to wait for Brandon to organise the next one.

  18. amin says:

    Hi Nicky.

I think there’s a very good chance that we’ll all be having another challenge very soon. It was certainly fun last time around and I expect this to be just as good.

    Thanks for dropping by!

  19. Saaleha says:

Amin please mail me on imraan.bhamjee@fnbisp.co.za

I’m having difficulty logging in to check my Yahoo mailbox. Also, whne I vivit your blog, I don’t get all the commnets. This one for instance gives me 14 of the comments only, so I haven’t seen your response as yet. Nicky kindly forwarded some of it to me

  20. Jasmin says:

Sorry I missed this short story challenge. Would’ve loved to participate
